America SCORES LA is a 501c3 nonprofit after‐school program that serves 400 students at 4 Title I elementary and middle schools in Palms/West LA. America SCORES uses soccer, poetry, and service-learning to inspire at-risk kids to succeed both on and off the field. Founded in 2002, America SCORES LA seeks to increase student engagement, levels of physical activity, and students’ sense of self‐worth and belonging. We help fill a gaping void in public education where students often have little or no exposure to organized physical activity and creative activities. America SCORES LA poet-athletes have remained healthy through participation in soccer while outperforming their peers in the classroom. Today, America SCORES LA Alumni include a Questbridge Scholar, Youth Hero Award Winner, 12 High School Captains, and first generation college students attending Duke University, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, UC Merced, Cal State Northridge, Marymount College, and other colleges and universities.
